Amy Carr is the Executive Director of Matthews Free Medical Clinic, a nonprofit that provides free healthcare to low income, uninsured people in Mecklenburg and Union Counties. Originally from outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Amy moved to Charlotte in 1999. Amy has had an active role with nonprofits in our community for over eight years and is also involved with MedLink of Mecklenburg, the Matthews Human Services Council and the Community Health Alliance.

Terry Hess is Senior Marketing Executive Director with Melaleuca, Inc.  She started shopping with Melaleuca, a green Manufacturer as a result of her search for green, healthy products.  She liked the company’s products and business model so much that she and Melaleuca formed a partnership and she has now been marketing with Melaleuca for over 10 years. Previously Terry was a National Sales Trainer and Senior Sales Director with BeautiControl, a personal image company.  Prior to that time, her career was in architecture (her major) both in Boone, North Carolina and Little Rock, Arkansas.Terry has been a Matthews Chamber Member for 3 years and has served (and is currently serving) as an Ambassador with the Chamber.

Becky Hawke is assistant town manager for the Town of Matthews and has served in local government management for the past 10 years. As assistant town manager she oversees the Town’s communications, economic development, finance, human resources, IT, and risk management departments/programs and initiatives.  Becky has B.A. and M.S. degrees in communication studies, a graduate certificate in human resources management, and is a member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). Becky is also a member of the Matthews Rotary Club – serving as Secretary for 2017-18, serves on the Matthews HELP Center Board of Directors, and volunteers with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and two dog rescue organizations.

Sonya Strader is the energetic co-owner of CottageCare. She and husband Max have been delivering reliable house cleaning service to thousands of area families since 1992. She also is an Area Director with TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Candlewyck Baptist Church depends on her dedication and Gideons International is another organization in which she is active. She has been on 5 international mission trips. She and Max have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren.

 Sue Sproat is the Executive Director of COSKids, Child Development Campus, a nonprofit in downtown Matthews (also known as Christ our Shepherd Ministries).  Sue grew up in Virginia and graduated from the University of Tennessee.  She worked in the fashion retail industry for 14 years as a buyer for a department store chain and later a chain of specialty stores.  She and her family moved to the Matthews area from Atlanta in 1992.    In the ensuing years, she began a new career in the insurance and financial services industry. Sue always maintained an active volunteer schedule, using her business and coordinator skills in her children’s schools, through her church, and in the community.  This volunteer work connected her to COSKids and she became a member of their Board of Directors.  She was then asked in 2013 to transition from the Board to Staff in order to lead an extensive program of campus improvements.

Dessi will be celebrating her 24th year with Edward Jones this year.  Her office is located in downtown Matthews, and she helps individual investors reach their financial goals.  She is very active in the community by currently serving on the Red Brick Partnership Board and Matthews Veterans Advisory Committee Board,. as well as the Matthews Chamber Board.  She has previously served on the Matthews Chamber Board for two different terms and the Matthews Area Habitat for Humanity Board.  She is married to David Dufresne, Captain with the Matthews Police Department.

 John R. Urban AIA returns to the Chamber Board, serving previously in 2004-2006.  He is also returning to the Matthews Board of Commissioners to serve his third term after serving from 2009-2013. Active in the community he currently serves on the Boards of the Matthews Free Medical Clinic, The Matthews Historical Foundation, and QUAD- The Four Town Alliance of South Charlotte Communities. He Co-Chairs the Red Brick Partnership for Downtown Matthews & serves at Forest Hill Church. John Urban is a licensed Architect and Owner of Urban Architectural Group PA located in Matthews. Most notably, his firm is responsible for the design of the Matthews North End Mixed Use District, D-1 Sports Training Facility, Point Blank Range and the historic renovation of the Massey Clark House, all located in Matthews. A Matthews resident for 18 years. John and his wife, Terry, have four daughters and two grandchildren.
